Overview
Typhoid fever is caused by Salmonella Typhi bacteria, spread mainly through food and water that has been in contact with sewage. Risk is higher in South Asia, parts of Africa and South America.
Who should consider it
- Travel to the Indian subcontinent, Africa or parts of South America
- Staying with local families or in basic accommodation
- Longer trips or visiting friends and relatives
Schedule
Single injection ideally given at least 2 weeks before travel. Boosters every 3 years if still at risk.
Protection
Around 50–80% effective — good food and water hygiene is still important.
Possible side effects
Mild arm soreness, occasional low-grade fever or headache.
