Overview
Hepatitis A is a viral infection of the liver, usually caught from food or water contaminated with the virus. It is common in many parts of Africa, Asia, Central and South America, the Middle East and parts of Eastern Europe.
Who should consider it
- Travel to countries with poorer sanitation
- Backpacking, adventure or off-the-beaten-track travel
- Visiting friends or family abroad
- Longer or repeated trips to higher-risk regions
Usually a single dose before travel, with a booster 6–12 months later for longer-term protection (up to ~25 years).
Protection generally starts within 2 weeks of the first dose.
Possible side effects
Most people tolerate it well. Mild soreness at the injection site, tiredness or a mild headache are the most common.
