Overview
Rabies is a viral infection spread through bites, scratches or licks on broken skin from infected animals, usually dogs but also bats and monkeys. It is present in most parts of Africa, Asia and South and Central America.
Who should consider it
- Long-stay travellers, expats and volunteers
- Trips to remote areas where medical care is far away
- Cycling, running or working with animals
- Travel to South and Southeast Asia, Africa and parts of the Americas
Pre-exposure: 3 doses over 3–4 weeks (accelerated schedules available). Boosters depend on ongoing risk.
Pre-exposure vaccination does NOT remove the need for treatment after a bite, but it simplifies and improves it, and gives time to reach medical care.
Possible side effects
Mild injection site soreness and occasional tiredness.
