Overview
Meningococcal disease can cause meningitis and septicaemia and progresses very quickly. The ACWY vaccine is required for pilgrims travelling to Saudi Arabia for Hajj and Umrah, and is recommended for travel to the African 'meningitis belt' and other higher-risk settings.
Who should consider it
- Hajj and Umrah pilgrims (mandatory)
- Travel to sub-Saharan Africa, especially in the dry season
- Backpackers, students and long-stay travellers
- Anyone living or working in close-contact settings abroad
Single dose at least 2–3 weeks before travel. Boosters typically every 5 years if still at risk.
Protects against meningococcal A, C, W and Y strains.
Possible side effects
Mild redness or soreness at the injection site; occasional headache.
