Overview
Japanese encephalitis is caused by a virus spread by mosquitoes in rural and farming areas of South, Southeast and East Asia, including parts of India, Thailand, Vietnam, China and Indonesia. Cases are rare in travellers but the infection can be very serious.
Who should consider it
- Longer stays (typically 1 month or more) in rural Asia
- Travel during or just after the rainy season
- Visits to rice paddies, farms or wetlands
- Cycling tours, trekking or fieldwork
Two doses 28 days apart (accelerated 7-day schedule available for adults under certain ages).
High level of protection after the full course. Mosquito bite avoidance remains essential.
Possible side effects
Headache, muscle aches and injection site discomfort can occur.
