Overview

Doxycycline is a daily antibiotic that is effective at preventing malaria. It can be a good choice for longer trips and is usually less expensive than other antimalarials.

Who should consider it

  • Longer trips to malaria areas
  • Budget-conscious travellers
  • Travellers who can take a daily tablet for an extended period
Schedule

One tablet daily, starting 1–2 days before entering a malaria area, throughout, and for 4 weeks after leaving.

Protection

Highly effective when taken correctly and consistently.

Possible side effects

Can increase sensitivity to sunlight (use sunscreen), and occasionally causes stomach upset or thrush. Should be taken with plenty of water and not just before lying down.

Please note: Not suitable in pregnancy or for young children.
