Overview
Cholera is a bacterial infection causing severe watery diarrhoea, spread through contaminated food and water. The vaccine is taken as a drink and is recommended for people travelling to areas with active outbreaks or where access to safe water and medical care is limited.
Who should consider it
- Aid workers and volunteers in outbreak areas
- Travel to refugee camps or post-disaster regions
- Long-stay travellers in higher-risk areas with poor sanitation
Schedule
Two oral doses 1–6 weeks apart, completed at least 1 week before travel. Boosters every 2 years.
Protection
Also provides some short-term protection against traveller's diarrhoea caused by ETEC.
Possible side effects
Mild stomach upset is the most common side effect.
